Solna - a city of the future in the making

Solna offers attractive housing, successful businesses, excellent communications, first-class public services and a rich range of culture and sports.

Arenastaden

Järvastaden

A new district called Järvastaden is being developed in north-west Solna. Around 1 570 apartments and approximately 170 terraced houses, semi-detached houses and link houses are planned for this district. There are also plans for a small number of business premises, schools, pre-schools and parks.

This new residential area will include attractive housing units alongside accessible and pleasant streets and green areas, all showing variety and being welcoming. The area lies within walking distance of the Ulriksdal commuter station. There is a nature reserve immediately to the north-west of this area.

Nya Ulriksdal

When the new district of Ulriksdal has been completed, it will accommodate approximately 1 500 housing units and 125 000 m2 of office and business premises. This area will consist of apartment blocks and terrace houses. Office buildings and other business premises will be erected close to the E4 and the railway to serve as a barrier against noise. Housing is located in the inner parts of this district. Ulriksdal is ideally located for public transport, right next to the commuter station.

Karolinska

With its focal point in the area around the Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Karolinska University Hospital (KS), there is a major concentration of research and entrepreneurs within life sciences, the broader definition of which includes biotechnology, biomedicine, medicinal products and medical technology.

This area will be further developed over the next few years thanks to the construction of Europe's most modern hospital, the Nya Karolinska Solna. The area around the hospital is being integrated with the Norra Station area between Solna and Stockholm, and will become the core of Solna's strong life science cluster.

Solna is also working with the City of Stockholm, Stockholm County Council, KI, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and other stakeholders in the Stockholm Science City Foundation to strengthen the position of Solna and Stockholm within the field of life sciences. This work is based on the Vision 2025 for Karolinska - Norra Station, the aim of which is to make the district a world-renowned area for life sciences.

Solna City

Its central location, which has good provision of public transport and excellent road links, has made Solna an attractive city in which to live and work. Our growing population is demanding better services and a wider range of cultural and commercial offerings. The central parts of Solna, with heavy traffic through an open, large-scale city landscape, need to be joined together and more clearly defined as the urban centre. New urban spaces and a clearer structure will link the districts around the centre, Solna City. One or more high-rise buildings of about 30 floors will spring up within the urban centre. The plans also include a new cultural centre, together with new and exciting shops and restaurants in a well-designed and attractive environment.

The SBL facility

The buildings for the National Bacteriological Laboratory (SBL) were erected in Huvudsta at the end of the 1930s. Most of the buildings in the area were designed by the architect Gunnar Asplund, and the area is considered to be one of Sweden's most important architectural works from the modernistic epoch. The facility was declared a building monument in 1995. There are now plans to build around 700 apartments here and approximately 48 000 m2 of office premises surrounding this cultural and historical environment.
